Are you planning to adopt a new dog soon? Congratulations! Bringing a new dog home is both exciting and fun. Your canine buddy will be a big part of your life for years to come, so you’ll want to start out on the right paw with Fido. Below, a Bucks County, PA vet discusses helping your new dog settle in.

Shopping For Fido

Before bringing Fido home, make sure you have everything you need. You’ll want to pick up a comfy bed, doggy toys, treats and food, dishes, and a leash and collar. We also recommend getting a crate for your furry friend. Have everything set up and ready in a quiet back room.

The Big Day

When you get your canine pal, don’t bring him directly into the house. Instead, go for a walk with your new furkid. This will help Fido burn off some excess energy, so he’s a bit calmer when he first enters your home. Bring your pooch to the quiet room first, so he can adjust to his new surroundings.

Training

Fido may need some training, though this will of course depend on your pet’s age and history. If your new furkid doesn’t know the five main commands of good doggy obedience, which are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down, he’ll need to go back to school. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Ground Rules

Set ground rules, and stick to them. If you don’t want Fido on the couch, then reprimand him every time he does it, starting on Day One. Be consistent!

Veterinary Care

Schedule an appointment with your vet for a thorough exam. You’ll also want to make sure Fido has been microchipped and spayed or neutered, and is current on vaccines and parasite control. Ask your vet for recommendations on your pooch’s food and diet regimen.

Schedule

Many dogs do better with a set schedule for walks, dinner, and playtime. Start your pooch on his new schedule right away. If it’s drastically different from what Fido was doing before, make the changes slowly, over a few days.

Let Love Grow

Give Fido time to get used to you and to learn to trust you. It’s a beautiful thing to watch a pet’s love and loyalty grow!
